A celestial wedding ✨ЁЯз┐❤️

“Bro I don’t have words to say. Am just half way, now marriage preparation going on. Am really really touched ЁЯе╣”

This is the text I received from my friend 2 days after I gifted him Kumarithuraivi English translation - Daughter of Kumari. I have started reading with him and finished it in a couple of days.

Kumarithuraivi is a novel written by Tamil and Malayalam writer and literary critic, one of the greats, if not the greatest from my language, Jeyamohan. The book is translated to English by Suchitra.

At the dawn of the 14th century during the muslim invasion in Tamil country, there was massive looting and mass destruction of temples. All the temple coffers were looted and bloodbath in all the temple cities. Scared of the army, all many great temple idols and lustrous jewels have been relocated to safeguard them. Chidambaram nataraja and Srirangam Namperumal idols were also relocated to multiple places and reached home once the Vijayanagar empire restored and renovated the temples. Viruppan thirunal in srirangam marks the event Viruppanna udaiyar reconsecrated the king of srirangam, Alagiya manavalan back to his throne.

Madurai Meenatchi was also transported to parakodi kandan sastha temple near aralvaimozhi during 1311 and she rested there till Kumara kampana set his foot on south to re consecrate the grand madurai temple in 1370. Gangadevi the queen of Kumara kampana had a dream in which a little girl with all eight marks of auspiciousness asked “O Queen, when will I go home?”. For Gangadevi this is an order from meenambal.

To return the Meenatchi amman to her home is not an easy task. From the day she set foot on Thiruvazhumkodu they were never short of any wealth. The guru thirumeni Brahmadattan Namboodirippad of Siveendram chiramadam guides them to get Meenatchi married to the Sundaresan the bridegroom of madurai, then return the couple to their homeland. In his words

“When the daughter leaves the house with her husband as a newly-wed wife, a mangalyavati glowing with all the full marks of auspiciousness the father’s heart is filled with an unspeakably sweet joy. All eight of the ashta-lakshmi deities fill the house with their presence then,...”

This is the story of that celestial wedding of Meenatchi and his love Sundaran and their return journey.

The beauty of meenatchi sundareswarar thirukalyanam is that it is not destined to the tamil land. We could witness multiple forms of this story, the stone and wood sculptures, copper images, stucco images in all the temple gopurams, paintings, performing arts and much more. The wedding of our little daughter is THE wedding. This novel is an authentic gateway to our culture, heritage and tradition.

For any historical fiction the history part stands as the runway on which the fiction takes off. All the historical data in this novel are so strong and it prepares us for the wedding event that takes place there after. While narrating the history of meenatchi’s journey to the king Chempakaraman says,

“Already they(Srivaishnavas of srirangam) had heard how, when the sultan’s hordes attacked Chirappalli, the priests of the temple there had taken its deity Ranganathan, into kerala”. Namperumal Vanavasam book which traces the Namperumals journey from Srirangam all the way till Tirumala and back to Srirangam. Here it mentions Alagiya manavalan’s short stay in kerala.

In another instance he says,

... The temples at kannanur, kuraiyur and sadaiyampalayam had been converted to mosques; those have also been reclaimed as temples and the deities have been re-homed with all the rites and sacrifices duly done.”

The kannanur posalisvaram temple is in current day samayapuram in trichy. Kumara kampana period inscription in the south wall of the entrance of raja gopuram says “the muslims after defeating the Hoysalas converted this temple to a mosque and Kumara kampana defeated the muslims and re consecrated the temple”. All these pieces are perfectly placed. We can expect nothing less from the master who has a large interest in history and philosophy.

The novel forms a huge canvas on which navigate to any strand of culture of this huge land. Just these four lines.

... the sivacharyas had finished the thirumanjanam...The nambi from Thiruvattar concentrated on Adikesavan. The pandarams similarly took care of pillaiyar and the elderly nadar poosari of muthalammai”.

One who navigates this thread might end up till the vedic roots. Meenatchi and Sundaresvaran are worshipped as per agamic rituals. Thiruvattar Adikesvan is a tantric deity. The pandarams have the hereditary right to perform pujai for pillaiyar. The muththalammai is a folklore deity (also an incarnation of Sakthi) thus the nadar poosari is taking care of her.

The very beauty of art is that it is universal. A scottish dad can relate with the Maharaja giving a diamond bangle to meenakshi, he might give his daughter a doughnut but with the same emotion.I was bit hesitant to read english translation as i might lose something in translation but Suchithra mam has done an extra ordinary work, lots of things are added to the original.

The role of brother in a wedding is equal to the couple. The thirumeni’s dream of Adikesavan taking the devi’s hand in his own glorious one and giving it to the mahadeva is one of the heartwarming moments of the novel. There are many interpretations of this celestial wedding and Vishnu remains constant in all of them. Though alagar couldn't make it to the madurai wedding (There is a reason for that), Pavalakkanivaai Perumal fills in for him.

The wedding events and the sri dhanam that meenatchi carries to madurai are the true depictions of our heritage and culture. Not to dispose the waste leaves till the event is over is something that i have seen many of the family events.

Since this work comes after his venmurasu all the landscape and wedding event narrations are picture perfect. All these great events are making one realise how tiny our presence in this universe and that is a very liberating feeling. The novel's climax is a such a statement that indviduals ego are so negligible in such great events. The error, that tiny error where our ego bursts and this supreme shows its face and laughs at us. I hav felt this liberating feeling in many of the festivals.

Je wrote this in 2021 April, when the covid 2nd wave was still claiming lives. Great men are the ones who have their personal world amidst the chaos. And our je is a master in it. I have seen it multiple times even when there are 50 friends around him, he can be in solitude. This escape from the pandemic is a pleasant escape from all the death count and “positive cases for the day” news.

I read it during 2022. It was one of my early reads of je’s work and I have reread it everytime i feel down or I am about to start any new venture. All my english and tamil new years start with Kumarithuraivi.

In many places Sundaresan is called as pandi naattan, pandyan country man. It is Manikkavasagars words who himself  a pandi naattan “Thillaiyul kooththane thenpaandi naattane” says Sivapuranam, Thiruvasagam.

"When gods can play with men, then can't men play with the gods too? Both plays happen all the time. One play reflects the other, like the images in a mirror, multiplying endlessly " Je says in the foreword. I still remember returning to madurai station weeping after witnessing one of her plays during 2024 chithirai thiruvizha. This wedding story itself is her turn of rolling the dice. We cant expect anything from this playful girl, can we ?

I'm can't witness Natarajar's idol without Appar’s “Kuniththa puruvamum” padhigam. I won't be able to see any Meenatchi Sundaresvaran wedding without kumari thuraivi. For the last 3 years I've been attending Chithirai Thiruvizha and I would finish at least the wedding portion by train from trichy to madurai. I am inviting people to join next year with me to witness the grandest of the grandest chithirai thiruvizha. This little princess is getting married to her love and the whole city is in festive vibes throughout the month. рооொрод்род роКро░ுроХ்роХுроо் роТрод்род роороХ роЕро╡.

This is the greatest story of my land, narrated by the greatest creator of my language and I am proudest in witnessing this become an universal work with this english translation. I have already given the Tamil and English translations to 10 of my friends and would give more as long as i could. This is an auspicious work full of only auspicious and positive events. The duality of a daughter who is also the mother is captured to its true sense this magnum opus.

Ya devi sarva budheshu, mathru roopena samsthitha !!
